I use GaiaGPS on my iPhone to create tracks when I’m out. With an annual subscription ($60USD), I’m able to download/upload and sync GPS tracks. Their web interface is great for creating routes that you can follow when you’re out so you don’t get lost.

I like CalTopo as well. I find it simpler. A key feature in both of these is the ability to download layers for offline use. Nothing worse than getting up the logging road to realize you need cell service to download the maps.
