“It almost wan’t so…. some stories of how successful advocacy by the climbing and mountaineering community helped to protect some treasured places”

with Rick Johnson and Russ Moir

This June is a milestone for 30 years of safe climbing at Fleming Beach in Esquimalt. Rick Johnson, who was actively involved in saving this resource from closure in 1996, will share some historical anecdotes and discuss the broader impact of this successful campaign.

Mount Arrowsmith Massif Regional Park was established in 2008. In no small measure this was a reflection of the tireless advocacy of club member Peter Rothermel over many years. Peter recently passed away, but the legacy of his work on this iconic peak lives on. Russ Moir will describe some of the routes, characters and ACC VI history of this iconic Island peak.
