The Thursday Feb 12th slide show (7 – 9:00pm) is going to be something a bit different. It will be held in Room A302 – Digital Scholarship Commons – in the McPherson Library at UVic. There will be lots of images and lots of stories, but the format will be a panel discussion with plenty of space for audience participation. Reception to follow!
Mountain Voices: A Celebration of Awe and Persistence

For almost 30 years UVic’s Mountain Legacy Project (MLP) has used repeat photography to examine the awe-filled landscapes of the Canadian mountain west.
Working with Library and Archives Canada, UVic Libraries, provincial archives, museums, and individuals to uncover historical mountain images MLP teams determine the location they were taken from, ascend to the same place, and rephotograph as accurately as possible. The historic and modern images are then aligned, analyzed, and made available to anyone interested in exploring Canada’s mountain heights ( explore.mountainlegacy.ca ). These remarkable hard sought images support management, scholarly, and Indigenous priorities.
Personal stories about the transcendent quality of mountains can stir deep emotions and remind us of what is at stake in a rapidly changing world. In Mountain Voices fifty mountain adventurers, researchers, storytellers, artists, and archivists explore the transformative power of mountains and mountain photographs.
Join Professor Eric Higgs, Dr Matt Huculak, and a panel of Mountain Voices contributors for an engaging, image-rich evening of lively discussion centred on mountains, why they matter to us, and how we can turn mountain awareness into mountain advocacy and action.

Parking at UVic – online guide
Free but restricted parking is available on Cedar Hill Cross Road between Henderson Road and Cadboro Bay Road. The restriction is usually a 3 hour maximum (ample for the evening). If you opt to park here, please check the signage in the area. It is a 10 to 15 minute walk to the McPherson from there.
