The original proposal for this outing was to tour Phillips ridge to Mt. Judy. The avalanche forecast was green top to bottom for the entire weekend: “The snowpack is generally stable; it may be appropriate to step out into more complex terrain” it advised.
With a weather forecast that looked good enough to get in position to be out there for 3 days we switched the objective to Big Interior NE, a summit I have been wanting to climb in winter conditions for several years.
The first day exceeded expectations. We did not get rained on as expected. Baby Bedwell and Bedwell lake were frozen enough to cross which makes for a big short cut (was a bit spooky at times though) and we were able to set up camp at treeline on the ridge above Little Jim lake.
Our summit day was a delightful ramble with a mix of touring, skiing, boot packing with crampons and some steep snow climbing sections. Conditions ranged from cloudy to full on without conditions which forced us to rope up and climb in walking terrain at times. Peak views of the surrounding summits were little treats throughout the day and gave us enough information to figure out the route as it unfolded.
