Required Skills: Participants must be experienced backcountry backpackers used to off trail travel, with experience in snow travel and ice axe self arrest skills. Comfort with scrambling on rock and scree is also important.

Recommended technical gear: ice axe, potentially crampons

Description: We will want to be in the Courtenay/Comox/Cumberland area the evening of Sept. 15th in order to get an early start on Sept. 16th. It is approximately 1.5 hrs drive from Cumberland to the starting point at Carey Lakes. Vehicle must be able to handle rough logging roads, and have high clearance, 4 wheel drive is recommended, but not required.

Our pace will be on the moderate side, but we hope to cover about 15 km the first day and camp along Rees Ridge south of Siokum Mt. We have built in an extra day, if we need or wish to stop earlier to camp. We can hike south to Celeste and Iceberg and back to camp on the second day if we make good time on day one. Option to summit Siokum Peak on day three, hike out or summit Siokum on day three and hike out day four. Leaders have been to the Carey Lakes area, but not to objectives, so this trip is somewhat exploratory for us! We have GPS tracks of several other trips though.

Trip is weather dependent.

Leaders: Roger & Peggy Taylor
