(K)nights in White Satin in the Sooke Hills

Saturday 5 April: Sooke Hills hike – designed to visit a few flower locations and get a bit of Sooke Hills dirt under our boots. Yes, we will be searching for the illusive White Satinflowers, kind of like White Satin Knights on a quest.

Approx 9.5 km / ~820m elevation gain

First we’ll check out the satinflowers and other wildflowers on a few of the Amigos. We will use a different approach that get on top of Alan’s Alp, usually the first Amigo to be visited. Then we will cross over, via Tony’s Triumph, to a seldom-visited ledge directly above the Amigos Ring Road. A bit of bushwhacking (and route-finding) to gain the lower slopes of Neil, through the “Arroyo del Muerto” to Stick Bump, on to Malcolm, and back to the Ring Road via the Heavenly Trail. How we return to the cars will depend on time and energy – lots of options – we will decide in the field!

Hiking boots with ankle support and good tread are recommended for this hike. Hiking poles never go amiss in the Sooke Hills. Bring water/hot drink, snacks and a lunch, rain gear, sunscreen, and the 10 essentials. An extra pair of socks might not go amiss as we will probably have a creek crossing. We will stop for 11ses, lunch, afternoon snack, and wildflowers – did I mention the wildflowers!

Parking at the Sooke Hills Wilderness Parking Lot off Sooke Road – come for 8:50 am so we can start together at 9:00.
