Join your fellow Alpine Club members for a 2-day Intro to Rock 102 course at Fleming Beach, hosted by Island Outdoor Guides (IAG), with an exclusive 10% discount for our members.
Start your outdoor climbing journey with an introduction to technical systems and movement on rock. Over two days, you’ll hone skills necessary to safely climb on top rope outdoors. By the end of the course, IAG will have you moving more confidently and safely over rock, with solid rope systems in place.
The fundamental skills learned on this course are a prerequisite for many of our technical mountaineering courses and provide a solid base of knowledge which can be applied in a multitude of ways. For many, Intro to Rock is a stepping stone towards learning to lead or climbing in the mountains.
Curriculum:
- Equipment overview (selection, use and care)
- Basic movement skills on rock
- Rope skills & management for top rope
- Top rope anchor building
- Lowering and Rappelling from anchors
- Coaching, progress evaluation & feedback
- Plenty of opportunity for supervised practice
Included in the price:
- 2 days of instruction with an ACMG guide
- Group technical gear
- Personal technical gear (helmet, harness, climbing shoes, etc.) – by request
Not included in the price:
- Transportation to and from meeting point
- Food
- Accommodation
- Clothing
- Annual/Individual Rock Climbing Permit to climb @ Fleming Beach from the Township of Esquimalt
Requirements:
This is a beginner-level course, no previous experience is necessary to partake. That said, please be prepared to:
- Spend two days outside in variable conditions (our courses run rain or shine)
- Hike short distances along uneven terrain
Cost: $382.50/person (+ 5% gst). *Discounted rate available until April 7, 2025.
Additional Costs: $12/person (+ 5% gst) for annual/individual Fleming Beach climbing permit. *Participants can also purchase their Fleming Beach climbing permit directly @ the Esquimalt Rec Centre.
